French Fort Louis

One of the major tourist attractions and an important monument in Pondicherry is the French Fort Louis. The Fort Louis in Pondicherry was one of the earlier establishments of the French in Pondicherry and it’s quite popular among tourists visiting the city. Most historians date the Fort back to the 18th century; the year 1709 to be precise. It was modelled on a French fort, established by Vauban at Tournai in the French speaking Belgium.

The awe inspiring fort has 5 bastions, two gates and has a pentagonal shape. Fort Louis has underground chambers which were used to store arms and ammunitions during colonial times.  A moat borders the magnificent Fort which in the days of old was dug to protect the fort from possible invasions. The French Fort Louis has also served as the Citadel of the city for many decades and has stood the test of time to be recognised as one of the foremost symbols of French colonialism in Pondicherry.
